Once one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Colossus of Rhodes was a 12-year project built by the Greek sculptor Chares in honor of the sun god Helios, whom the Rhodians wished to honor in celebration for the unity of their three city-states. Rhodes was an important economic center in the ancient world; it was located off the southwestern tip of Asia Minor where the Aegean Sea meets the Mediterranean. The statue was 110 feet high and stood upon a 50 foot pedestal near the harbor. Nude, wearing a spiked crown, shading its eyes from the rising sun with his right hand, and holding a cloak over his left, the traditional Greek pose was constructed of gold-refined bronze plates over an iron framework. The Colossus stood proudly at the harbor entrance for 56 years before an earthquake leveled it; the statue broke at the knees, collapsed, and huge pieces of the figure lay along the harbor for over 900 years before Arabs conquered Rhodes in the 7th century and sold the pieces as scrap metal.

Pelikan's tributary pen is produced in a limited edition of 408 pieces as a reminder of the founding of the town of Rhodes in 408 B.C. The shaft of the pen features a golden replica of the impressive statue combined with other finely hand-engraved elements. The cap is manufactured from high-quality bronze and refined with gold-plating. The bronze clip is also gold-plated and ornamented with Greek decor. Each instrument is fitted with an exquisite hand-crafted 18k gold nib and engraved with the edition number on the filler knob.
