Pelikan got its start in 1838 near Hannover, Germany, as a paint and ink factory. After it was sold to employee Gunther Wagner in 1871, the firm adopted the Pelikan name and logo from Wagner's family crest. After a half century making writing inks, Pelikan produced its first fountain pen — and the first reliable piston filling system—in 1929.
