Faber-Castell commenced operations in 1761, when Kaspar Faber started to produce pencils in Stein, near Nuremberg. Faber-Castell is one of Europe’s oldest industrial enterprises, and it has been owned by the same family for eight generations. Baron Lothar von Faber took over the company in 1839, developed the hexagonal pencil, and created the first brand name writing instrument when he inscribed each instrument with “A. W. Faber.” Today Faber-Castell has fifteen factories around the world, can be found in more than 100 countries, and produces over 1.8 billion black lead and colored pencils annually. They cultivate all of their own wood for their pencils in Brazil, thus helping to conserve natural resources. Quality remains one of the most important elements of the company, as well as their claim that "Form follows fun and function."
