Seiko heralds the arrival of the quiet revolution of Spring Drive into space with the Spring Drive Space Walk. Designed for the October 2008 space walk of renowned video game designer Richard Garriott, the Space Walk joins the first “2nd generation” space partnership; Garriott’s father, NASA astronaut Dr. Owen Garriott, wore a Seiko on his space flights in 1983. The Spring Drive movement was chosen for Richard because of the Tri-synchro Regulator’s ability to use and generate mechanical, electrical and electromagnetic power with little disturbance from extreme temperature variations. The dial reveals the function of the 416-part calibre: basic time, GMT hand, date window at 3, and chronograph with 72-hour power reserve. Other revolutionary features include: - Airtight case: Combining features from diver watches and a newly developed rubber-like gasket, the case is completely airtight, protecting the accuracy of the movement from the vacuum of deep space.
- Lightness: the 53mm case is made of high-intensity titanium (40% lighter than stainless steel) and features recesses in the side of the case that eliminate unnecessary weight.
- Readability: The hands and markers are treated with several layers of Lumibrite, ensuring a dial that is 3 times brighter than a regular luminous watch.
- Ease of use: A uniquely shaped crown and buttons at 12 o’clock provide functionality while wearing space gloves.
A limited edition of 100 space-worthy watches.
